An anti-terrorist coalition air base was shelled in western Iraq
Ain al-Assad air base in western Iraq's Anbar province has come under rocket fire, Al-Sumaria reported, citing a security source.
According to the source, the Katyusha rocket fell near the air base, no one was injured.
In turn, the representative of the operation "Unwavering determination" in Iraq, Colonel Wayne Marotto wrote on Twitter that the air base was fired at by three missiles. On the other hand, a RIA Novosti source in Iraq said that a total of seven missiles were fired on the territory of Ain al-Assad, three of which fell directly on the territory of the air base.
Ain al-Assad Base is located 160 kilometers north of Baghdad. In June last year, a spokesman for Iraq's commander-in-chief, Yahya Rasul, said it was the only base in the country where US-led international anti-terrorist coalition troops remain.
On January 5, 2020, the Iraqi Parliament voted by a majority to withdraw foreign troops from the country, and also called for a revision of the format of cooperation with the US-led international anti-terrorist coalition. The move was in response to a US operation near Baghdad International Airport that killed Iranian General Kasem Suleimani, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhi al-Muhi, deputy chief of the Iraqi Shiite militia, on the night of January 3 of that year.
Following these events, the international coalition, led by the United States, handed over to the Iraqi military a number of facilities where the US military had previously been stationed, including a number of air bases and the headquarters of coalition military advisers.
