The United States told Kabul that it was not going to establish military bases in Central Asia after the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. This was announced on Monday, July 5, by the Afghan President's National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib.
“As far as I know, this is out of the question. I think there were erroneous reports in the media. According to our contacts with the American side, they are not looking for ways to establish military bases anywhere, ”he said in an interview.
Mohib added that if the United States is conducting such negotiations, he does not know anything about it. At the same time, he noted that he expects cooperation in the region in the field of servicing military equipment.
“We, as Afghans, are rather looking for technical support from the countries of the region. For example, we have Russian-made Mi-17 helicopters, and we are looking for opportunities to repair them. In this regard, we consider the countries of Central Asia, since they also use them and they have common borders with Afghanistan, ”the adviser added.
According to him, Kabul is studying how the Central Asian countries can help Afghanistan in this matter.
The first deputy head of the international committee of the Federation Council, Vladimir Dzhabarov, said on May 10 that the deployment of US military bases in Central Asia would create tension in the region and lead to destabilization of the situation in these countries.
Earlier that day, The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States could move troops from Afghanistan to Central Asian countries, particularly Uzbekistan. At the same time, the interlocutors of the publication pointed to the "large military presence" of Russia in the region and the growing influence of China, which creates difficulties for this.
However, a source in the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan said that the defense doctrine of the state does not provide for the possibility of deploying military bases of other states in the country.
On April 29, US President Joe Biden ordered the complete withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
On May 3, US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby said the American withdrawal process would proceed smoothly.
