More than a thousand illegal migrants have been detained at the border with Belarus since June 1, said the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Shimonyte.
On July 2, the Lithuanian authorities declared an extreme situation in connection with the influx of illegal migrants. In turn, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that the republic will no longer restrain illegal migrants to the EU countries - because of the sanctions of the West, Minsk has "neither the money nor the strength for this."
Earlier, the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania reported that six employees of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency FRONTEX are starting to patrol the borders of the republic with Belarus together with the Lithuanian border guards. It is planned that from mid-July their number will increase to 30. Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite, against the background of an increase in the number of detentions of illegal migrants, stated that she suspects Belarusian border guards of helping illegal immigrants to cross the border.
In recent days, Lithuanian border guards have been detaining more than a hundred illegal migrants from Belarus per day, while over the past year, 81 illegal migrants were detained at the border with Belarus.
