Russian Consulate General in Afghan Mazar-i-Sharif closed until the situation is clarified
The Russian embassy in Kabul is reliably protected, there are no plans for evacuation due to the difficult situation in Afghanistan, while the Russian consulate general in Mazar-i-Sharif temporarily suspended work, the diplomatic mission said.

Earlier, the adviser to the Afghan president for national security Hamdullah Mohib told RIA Novosti that the situation in the north of the country is very serious, but Kabul hopes that it will not get out of control. According to him, government forces are planning a counteroffensive in areas that the Taliban are capturing.

Earlier, the UN Secretary General's special envoy, head of the UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) Deborah Lyons said that since the beginning of May the Taliban have captured 50 of the 370 regions of Afghanistan, while US and NATO troops are leaving the country.

The US administration began on May 1 and until September 11 promised to complete the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in full coordination with the allies. In 2020, Washington and Taliban officials signed the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war in Doha. It provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the beginning of an inter-Afghan dialogue after the exchange of prisoners.
