The US Food and FDA has postponed its decision to approve the Moderna vaccine for adolescents 12-17 years old for the prevention of COVID-19. The reason was the reports of cases of myocarditis in those vaccinated with this drug.
It will take more time for the regulator to study reports of rare cases of myocarditis among those who have been vaccinated. Moderna said it supports the FDA's decision because patient safety is of the utmost importance to the company.
Consideration of Moderna's application for its adolescent coronavirus vaccine could be completed no earlier than January next year, the manufacturer said in a statement. An application for this permit was sent to the regulator in June this year.
Last week, the FDA approved the use of another coronavirus mRNA vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech in children aged 5-11. The drug became the first drug registered in the United States for COVID-19 among children.
